I cannot find Rachel in the 1860 census. She is not recorded with any of her known children, all of whom I’ve found. But there were probably additional children born between 1819 and 1825, who might have been living in another county. Also, when people shuffled between relatives often they were missed by the census.

1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Bethel precinct, lists Rachel age 70, retired (and presumably widowed, although the 1870 census does not record marital status), as a boarder with her daughter Lucinda.

Bath County Marriage Book 1, as transcribed by Alice P. Reynolds, lists this marriage as Samuel Vewuel and Rachel Michall. The census, though, shows a Daniel and Rachel Varvel.

There are very likely to be additional children to this family, who had either died or left the nest before 1850.

1820 census of Floyd Co., Ky, enumerated 7 Aug, lists :
Daniel Varvil: 1 male 26-44: 1 female 16-25; 1 male under 10; 3 males 10-15.

This suggests that Rachel was Daniel’s second (or later) wife, and that he had at least three sons by a previous wife.

I cannot find this family in the 1830 or 1840 censuses, neither in Kentucky nor Ohio. (They may have been living in Adams Co., Ohio, or across the river in Mason Co., Ky, in 1847, judging by their son John’s marriage record.) It may be that they were living with a relative, with Daniel not recorded as a head of household, or it might be that he sometimes went by another given name.

Varvel, Daniel, 73, Penn.; Rachel, 50, Ky; Lucinda, 12, Ky; Armilda, 16, Ky.
