Notes for Rose Anna Bowen
Her death certificate records Rosa Ann Varvel, age 96 years 7 months 2 days, born 1 March 1817 in W. Va, died 3 Nov 1914 in Meigs township, Adams Co., Ohio, widowed, father Daniel Boone Bowens, born in Va, mother’s maiden name Polly Dobson, born in W. Va., cause of death senile debility, informant Henry H. Bowens, Peebles R.D., burial in Jacksonville.
Her age has apparently been inflated in later years; her parents did not marry until 12 Jan 1826, and she was recorded as 33 in 1860, 41 in 1870, and 55 in 1880. It is very likely that the informant is her son Henry Harvey Varvel, and that his surname was recorded incorrectly by the clerk. This is the only record that says she was born in West Virginia (or Virginia). All the census records say Ohio.
Census
In 1900 she was recorded as Rosanna Varvel, age 79, widowed, b. Mar 1829, mother, in a household headed by her son George.
In 1910 she was recorded as Rose A. Varvel, age 91, widowed, mother, in a household headed by her son Harvey.
Notes for John Wesley & Rose Anna (Family)
Adams Co., Ohio marriage book 1 records the marriage on 21 Jan 1847 of John Varvel of Kentucky, and Rosena Bowen of Franklin township. A consent note dated 17 Jan 1847 from his father states “I hereby certify that my son Wesley is twenty one and I am willing for his marriage. Daniel Varvel.” Sworn before witnesses Adam Bowen and Jonathan Jones.
Census
I cannot find this family in the 1850 census.
1860 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Meigs township, Dunbarton P.O., enumerated 28 June, lists on pp. 81-82 as family #571/559:
John W. Varvel, 34, farm hand, b. Ky; Rosannah, 33, b. Ohio; Elizabeth, 13; Menerva J., 11; Rachel, 9; Catharine, 6; Geo W., 3; James V., 4/12. All children born in Ohio.
1870 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Meigs township, Wheat Ridge P.O., enumerated 8 July, lists on p. 13 as family #100:

The census taker apparently misheard 45 as 35 for John’s age.
