Notes for James Van Varvel
The Illinois deaths index lists James Van Varvel, age 81, born 24 Feb 1854 in Jacksonville, Ohio, died 12 Dec 1935 in Wellington, Iroquois Co., Illinois, father Wesley Varvel, mother’s maiden name Rosa Bowen, spouse Alice Spencer Varvel.

His gravestone has his name as Van Varvel.
Notes for Mary Alice Spencer
The Illinois deaths index lists Mary Alice Spencer Variel, age 76, born 8 Oct 1854 in Brentonville, Ohio, died 8 Oct 1931 in Woodland Village, Belmont township, Iroquois Co., residence Willington, Illinois, wife of Van Variel, father Timothy Spencer, mother’s maiden name Catherine Cront.

Her gravestone has her dates instead as 17 Feb 1854 to 12 Oct 1931. The death index may have inadvertently duplicated the day and month of death into the birth fields. I don’t know whether the 8th or the 12th is correct for the death date.

Even so, the birth year 1854 is almost certainly incorrect. She was recorded in the 1860 census as age 1, in the 1870 census as age 10, and in the 1900 census as age 40 born March 1860. This suggests she was really born in 1859. (I haven’t found her in the 1880 census. Perhaps the marriage to Van was not really her first.) The birthplace on the death record is probably wrong as well, since her parents were living in Brown Co., Ohio in 1860. (There is no Brentonville, Ohio. There is a Bentonville in Adams Co., Ohio.)
Census Notes for James Van & Mary Alice (Family)
1900 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Meigs township, enumerated 15 June, lists on p. 14B as family #308/313:
Varvel, Vance (?), 40, b. Feb 1860, Oh Ky Oh, day laborer; Alice, wife, 40, b. Mar 1860, Oh Oh WVa, married 21 years, mother of 10 children, 8 living; James H., son, 20, b. Oct 1879; Joseph E., son, 17, b. Nov 1882; Samuel C., son, 15, b. Jan 1885; Versie L., dau, 12, b. Apr 1887; Matilda F., dau, 11, b. Nov 1888; Charles C., son, 9, b. Apr 1891; Harry C., son, 5, b. Oct 1894; Lottie J., dau, 3, b. Apr 1897. All children born Oh Oh Oh.

The name for Van is longer than three letters, and probably says Vance, but it has one of those darn statistical annotations on top (10-1/of 10), making it hard to read what’s underneath. What’s after the Van could be any 2 to 4 letters with no tails or ascenders, such as Vannon or Vanner.

The number of years married is probably wrong by two years, as well as the birthdate for James, since the 1880 census, taken in June, recorded Van as still single.

1910 census of Iroquois Co., Illinois, Belmont township, enumerated 20 April, lists on p. 2B as family #42:
Varvel, James V, 50, b. Ohio Ky WVa, laborer on railroad; Mary A., wife, 50, b. Oh Oh Oh, first marriage for both, married 30 years, mother of 12 children, 9 living; Charlie, son, 19; Harry, son, 16; Lottie, dau, 13; Fred, son, 6, b. Illinois Oh Oh. Older children born Oh Oh Oh.
