William and Rachel were first cousins once removed - William was a grandson and Rachel a great-granddaughter of Samuel Mitchel and Rebecca Pettit. They were also brother and sister in law to each other, since Wlliam’s brother James married Rachel’s sister Sarah Elizabeth.
