Her age has been greatly inflated. In 1835 her mother was only 8 years old, and her parents were not married until Jan 1847. She was listed as age 13 in the 1860 census. (The John Wesley Varvel family has not been located in the 1850 census, and may have been skipped.)

James and Elizabeth were first cousins once removed - James was a grandson and Elizabeth a great-granddaughter of Samuel Mitchel and Rebecca Pettit. They were also brother and sister in law to each other, since James’ brother William married Sarah Elizabeth’s sister Rachel.
