He was listed in 1850 with his mother and grandmother as James Ratliff age 6, with his uncle John Ratliff in 1860 as James Harvey age 15, and in 1870 with his first wife Elizabeth as James Ratliff age 24.

I have not found him in 1880, as either James or Harvey.

1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Grassy precinct, Hazel Green P.O., lists on p. 5 as household 31/32:
Wilson, Preston, 28, farmer; Ratliff, James, 24, farm laborer; Elizabeth, 22. All born in Ky.
