Notes for James Clark
So far as I know, James Clark is not related to me, and there is no real reason to think he might be. In particular, he moved to Kentucky decades before my Clarks, who did not arrive until around 1840. But his wife Comfort Ingram is distantly related.
Notes for James & Comfort (Family)
Bath County marriage bonds list bond issued to James Clark and Cumfort Ingram on 1 Feb 1815, bondsman William Sexton, Mary Ingram gave permission for her daughter.
The fact that Comfort’s mother gave permission for the marriage would tend to indicate that she was under 18 in 1815, but she is listed as age 60 in the 1850 census. So it may be that her mother was only attesting that she was of age. (Of course, census ages are often quite off, especially for people over 50.) In the 1840 census she was in the 40-49 age bracket.
The William Sexton who witnessed her marriage may have been William b. 1778, the second son of Benjamin Sexton and Comfort Smith.
Census
1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, lists on page 226, line 11:
James Clark, males 1 under 10, 2 10-14, 2 15-19, 1 20-29, 1 50-59; females 1 15-19, 1 40-49.
The female 15-19 is probably Fielding’s wife Rebecca, rather than an unidentified daughter, because Fielding married in 1837, and he is not listed separately in this census.
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 23 Aug, lists on p. 44 as family #604:
Comfort Clark, 60; Benjamin F., 22; Isaac, 19. All born in Kentucky.
