Notes for Elijah Jackson “Jack” Layne
Jackson’s death certificate says that he died 13 Aug 1930 in Olive Hill, Carter Co., Ky, at age 57. His birthplace was listed as Elliott Co., Ky, and his parents were listed as Sam Layne, born Scott Co., Va, and Minnie Brown, born Elliott Co., Ky. Cause of death was listed as “walked across street and was hit by automobile.” The informant was Dice Layne, wife.
“Minnie” may be a misreading of “Mimie”. There is no Jack Lane or Layne in the 1880 census of Elliott Co. (in fact, the only Lane or Layne at all is a Benjamin H. Lane age 48 living alone), but there was an Elijah J. Brown age 7 living with his mother Jemima Brown, and that Jemima Brown was a niece of the Stephen Dehart with whom Jackson Lane was living in 1900.
Census
1900 census of Elliott Co., Kentucky, Martinsburg precinct, lists as household #249, family 253:
Lane, Jackson, 26, b. Dec 1873, farmer, Ky Va Ky; Catherine, 22, b. Oct 1877, wife, Ky Ky Ky, married 4 years, 3 children, 2 living; Manda J., dau, 2, b. May 1898, Ky Ky Ky; Zella E., dau, 11/12, b. July 1899, Ky Ky Ky; Segraves, Alexander, bro-in-law, 10, b. Dec 1889, Ky Ky Ky.
The family is sharing a household with Stephen Dehart age 81 and his wife Eliza age 68. Stephen Dehart is probably Jackson’s great-uncle, the brother of his probable grandmother Mary “Polly” Dehart who married Stephen Brown.
