I have not found Jemima in the 1870 census. She is not in Elliott Co., perhaps she was in Morgan or Carter.
1880 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Martinsburg precinct, lists as family #260 (next door to John Brown):
Brown, Jemmima, 44, farmer, Ky Va Va; Elijah J., 7, son, Ky Va Ky.
Jemima is listed as married, but I’m almost certain this is the daughter of Stephen Brown and Polly Dehart.

It is unknown whether Jemima and Sam were ever married. Their son Jackson had the surname Layne as an adult, but in the 1880 census both Jackson and Jemima are listed as Browns.
