Notes for Stephen Brown
I do not have solid evidence of Stephen’s parents; in the 1880 census he was living as a boarder with an apparently unrelated Goodman family. But in both 1900 and 1910 he and Elizabeth are living next door to the family of Wallace W. Brown and Lula Belle Adams, and Stephen and Elizabeth named one of their daughters Lula Belle. Also, Wallace’s grandfather was named Stephen Brown. This suggests that Stephen might be a brother of Wallace, but the problem with that hypothesis is that Wallace had a brother Thomas who was born in Oct 1871. So unless one of them reported the wrong birth year, those dates conflict.
Another piece of evidence that he is related to Stephen Brown and Polly Dehart is that his daughter (or son? - see Lyda’s notes) Lyda is buried in the Brown-Porter Cemetery on Brown Ridge, which is basically a family cemetery for their descendants.
The most likely situation to me is that Stephen was born out-of-wedlock to Jemima Brown, sister of Wallace Brown’s father John Brown, which would make him a first cousin of Wallace Brown. Jemima is known to have had an out-of-wedlock son Jack born in 1873, who sometimes went by the surname Brown and sometimes Lane or Layne. So she may have had another son born 2 years earlier, and named him after her father.
