Rowan Co. birth records, on LDS microfilm #216839, list W. H. Alfrey, b. October 16, 1857, son of Samuel Alfrey & Mary A. Alfrey. (The book is supposed to list the mother's maiden name, and usually does, but the clerk compiled it from reports submitted by doctors and midwives, and there are four entries in a row with the mothers listed by their married names.)

Be careful not to confuse this William H. Alfrey with the one born 29 Aug 1855, son of Alfred H. Alfrey. There were two William H. Alfreys in Rowan Co. nearly the same age. (There would have been three, if the William H. Alfrey born in 1856 to Thompson Alfrey had not died at age 3.)

Her death certificate records Josephine Caudill, age 72 years 3 months, born 28 Feb 1866 in Rowan Co., died 28 May 1938 in Fayette Co., residence Rowan Co., widowed, listing both late husbands, W. H. Alfrey and W. B. Caudill. Josephine’s father is listed as Joe Myers, and her mother’ maiden name as Polly Bohannon. The informant was Sidney Alfrey, burial to be in Alfrey graveyard.

Her first husband, William H. Alfrey, is buried under a double stone that also lists her as Josephine Alfrey, with her birthdate, but not her date of death. It was probably inscribed when William died, and not updated upon her burial.

Rowan Co. marriage book A, p. 69, records the marriage of W. H. Alfrey and Josepheen Myers on 15 Jun 1882.

Identification of which of the two William H. Alfreys in Rowan Co. married Josephine Myers is based on cemetery records, since Josephine and William are buried together with a double stone that has full birthdates for both of them, and this William’s birthdate is known from Rowan Co. birth records.
