The article on the Alfrey family in the 1956 Centennial Edition of the Rowan Co. News8 is headed by a picture with the following caption "Family of Sam and Mary (Manley) Alfrey, descendants of Fielding Alfrey, one of the first settlers in Rowan County. Front row, from left: Willie Alfrey, Peach Alfrey Williams, Harve N. Alfrey. Back row: Sam Alfrey, the father, and Mary Manley Alfrey, the mother, Young Fielding Alfrey, Martha Alfrey Crostwait, Young Allen Alfrey."

Her grave is marked with a double stone that is inscribed “Mary J. Alfrey”, but the 1850, 1860, 1880 and 1900 censuses all list her name as Mary Ann or Mary A. The gravestone also has her birthdate as 13 Feb 1840, but the 1900 census says Feb 1841.

Rowan Co. court records on microfilm at the Rowan County Public Library list marriage on 30 Dec 1856 of Samuel Alfry, 20, b. Morgan Co. to Mary Manley, 16, b. Bath Co.

1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 1 as family #162/181:
Samuel Alfrey, 43, farmer; Mary A., 39, wife; William H., 22, son; Martha E., 15, dau; Sarah P., 13, dau; Allen, 11, son; Harvey, 5, son; Elizabeth Gill, 64, boarder, widowed; Lucinda Reed, 60, boarder, Rachel Ramey, 45, servant. All household members and their parents are recorded as born in Kentucky.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pierce precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 1A as family #1:
Alfrey, Samuel, 63, b. Aug 1836, farmer, married 43 years; Mary A., 59, b. Feb 1841, wife, mother of 6 children, 6 living; Fielding, 85, b. Dec 1814, father, widowed; Lewis, boarder, 61, b. Mar 1839; Young, Myrtle, servant, 14, b. Nov 1885. All born Ky Ky Ky. (Lewis is Samuel’s first cousin, the son of Adam Alfrey. Myrtle Young would later marry Samuel’s nephew, Levi Alfrey.)
