1880 census of Elliott Co., Kentucky, Martinsburg precinct, enumerated 27 June, lists on p. 36 as family #268:
Steagall, Joshua, 43, b. Ky Va Va; Stephen, 18, son; Thomas, 15, son; Catherine, 13, dau; Ellen, 10, dau; Amos, 7, son. All children recorded as born Ky Ky Ky, although it should be Ky Ky Va. Clyne, Mary, 40, sister in law, single, b. Va Va Va.
Most of Dock’s children simplified the spelling of their name to either Stegall or Stigall.
