Martin died in a mining accident sometime in the late 1870’s. The History of Elliott County56 book says it was a coal mining accident, but given that the 1880 census listed Martin’s brother Daniel, stepfather Thomas Hamer and Thomas’s two teenage sons all as iron miners, I suspect that Martin was probably working in an iron mine as well.
