Both of Joel’s parents died young, his mother when he was six, and his father when he was 10. He spent his teens and twenties living with his paternal grandmother, Delilah (Hounsell) Kegley.
Beginning in 1897 at the age of 19, and continuing until his death, he kept a journal in which he recorded events such as births, deaths, marriages, relocations and news items. It was continued by his widow Ada until 1945, and his son Darris added some entries in 1947. This journal has been transcribed and published on the Carter County KYGenWeb site, captioned as the “J. W. Kegley Diary
112”, although it is really more of a ledger, since there is no personal commentary on the events recorded. He refers to himself throughout the entire journal in the third person, as J. W. Kegley.
His journal is the primary reason that I am entering Joel into my database. I have no relationship to this family, but I do to some of the people mentioned within it, so I have occasionally used it as a source. Figuring that people reading the source notes might wonder “who was this J. W. Kegley?”, I’ve entered enough of his ancestry to answer that question.
Although he was a farmer by trade, quite a few of the journal entries record openings and closings of singing schools. I do not know if he charged for the singing lessons, or if this was done as more of a hobby.
His death certificate records Joel W. Kegley, age 60 years 3 months 1 day, born 28 July 1878 in Elliott Co., Ky, died 30 Oct 1938 in Moccasin precinct, Elliott Co., Ky, farmer, married, residence Gimlet, Ky, father William G.
