Newton and Elizabeth’s children were living with Thomas H. Smith and wife Mary in the 1860 census, so Elizabeth may be Thomas and Mary’s daughter. But I have no other evidence for that.

Newton, Dowdy, 36, grocer; Elizabeth, 28; Mary J., 8; Nancy E., 6; Sarah P., 4; Emely J., 2; Martha, 1. All born “Kana Va”. (This enumerator made J and I identical, so either of the two initial J’s above could be I’s.)
1860 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, enumerated 3 Aug, lists on p. 139 as family #1006/938:
Thos H. Smith, 65, farmer; Mary, 60; Sarah Dowdy, 14; Martha, 12; Lucy; 10; Riley W., 8. All born in Virginia.
