Notes for William Henry Brown
His death certificate states William Henry Brown, age 63 years 5 months 13 days, born 15 July 1864 in Kentucky, died 28 Dec 1927 in Morehead, Rowan Co., Ky, married, father Jack Brown, mother’s maiden name Mary Cassity, both born in Ky, cause of death pernicious anemia, burial in Caudill Cemetery. The informant field is blank.
Be careful not to confuse this William Brown with one of the others in the area who were nearly the same age.
The 1870 census showed two William Browns age 6 in Morgan Co. (one the son of Isaac Brown and Sabina Reed, the other with the family of John Ratliff and Sarah Brown), and one age 7 in Elliott Co (son of Andrew Brown and Malissa Adkins) - none age 5. This is most likely the one living with the Ratliff family, since there was no Jack (or Jackson) Brown with a wife Mary in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. Also the one who was the son of Isaac Brown and Sabina Reed was still single in the 1900 census, living with his widowed mother.
Notes for Minnie Markwell
Her death certificate records Minnie Markwell Brown, age 79, born 14 Sep 1871 in Rowan Co., died 18 Sep 1950 in Ashland, Boyd Co., Ky, residence 3212 Carter Ave, Ashland, Ky, resident of Ashland for 18 years, widowed, father Arin Markwell, mother’s maiden name unknown, cause of death gangrene of both legs due to arterial emboli, informant Mrs. Z. T. Ingram, burial in Caudill Cemetery, Rowan Co.
Notes for William Henry & Minnie (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 1, p. 139, records bond issued for W. H. Brown and Minnie Markwell on 9 Sep 1887, surety by Aaron Markwell. Register book A, p. 10 also records the marriage as taking place on 11 Sep 1887.
Census
1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 10B as family #202:
Brown, Wm. H., farmer, 36, b. Aug 1863; Minnie, wife, 26, b. Sep 1873, married 12 years, mother of 5 children, 3 living; Flossie, dau, 8, b. March 1892; George, son, 6, b. July 1893; Mary, dau, 2, b. Aug 1897. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The birthdate for Minnie is likely to be off by two years. She was recorded as 8 years old in the 1880 census, which agrees with her death certificate.
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct 1, enumerated 3 May, lists on p. 12A as family #210/212:
Brown, W. H., 45, manager of lumber mill; Minnie, wife, 37, married 23 years, mother of 7 children, 2 living; George R. son, 17, laborer at saw mill; Mary, dau, 12; Willie, 5, son; Edna, dau, 4. All born Ky Ky Ky.
I do not understand the “2 living children” part, since there are obviously at least 4 living childen, all hers. Perhaps the question was misinterpreted, and it means two have died? (The same two who had died before 1900.)
1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, precinct #7 (Clearfield Road), enumerated 21-23 June, lists on p. 9A as family #38:
Brown, William, 54, saw mill store; Minnie, wife, 47; Willie, son, 15; Edna, dau, 13; Margret, dau, 7. All born Ky Ky Ky.
1930 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct 7, enumerated 4 April, lists on p. 12A as family #32:
Brown, Minnie, 54, widowed, age at first marriage 15, merchant at grocery store; Edna M., dau, 22, single; Marvin Jr., son, 18. All born Ky Ky Ky.
Somehow a daughter Margaret seems to have transformed into a son Marvin Jr.
