Notes for Mary “Polly” Ann Sparks
Rowan Co. death records list Polly Fults, age 38 years 11 months 10 days, died 28 Nov 1858, born in Virginia, parents Jesse and Nancy Sparks, married, cause of death typhoid fever.
Notes for Morgan & Mary “Polly” Ann (Family)
Morgan and most of his children appear as “Fults” in the early censuses and birth records, but nearly all descendants spell their name as Fultz (the Rowan Co. cemetery survey shows 1 Fults burial and 110 Fultz burials), so for consistency I am using the latter spelling.
Census
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, enumerated 13 Oct, lists on p. 343 as family #1167:
Morgan Fultz, 32, laborer, b. Ky; Mary, 31, b. Va; Daniel, 15; Barbary, 11; Jesse, 10; Nancy, 8; Pricilla, 5; John, 4; Charles, 1. All children born in Ky.
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, enumerated 7 June, lists on p. 10 as family #70:
Morgan Fults, 42, farmer; Clarinda, 25; John, 14; J. L., 12; Colonel, 9; Polly Ann, 6; Eli, 5; Amanda S., 1; Rosana, 6; David, 8/12. All born in Ky.
“J. L.” must be the son listed as Charles age 1 in the 1850 census, but it is very clearly a J, identical to the one for John in the line above. The son listed as “Colonel” here appears as Morgan age 16 in the 1870 census.
Only the baby David is a child of Morgan and Clarinda; John through Amanda are children of his first wife Mary Sparks. Rosana being listed out of age order, together with being recorded as the same age as Polly Ann, may indicate that she is a daughter of Clarinda by a different father.
See notes for Morgan’s second marriage, to Clarinda Fannin, for 1870 and 1880 census readings.
