“Ercell Tyrone Gifford, 97, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2007, in Crescent City.
He was born on April 24, 1909, in Mangum, Ky. Mr. Gifford came to Crescent City in 1955 and was one of the early working shareholders at Standard Veneer Timber Company until he retired in 1970. He lived for in Ocala, Fla., after retiring then returned to Crescent City in 1991. He loved hunting and fishing in the mountains and rivers surrounding Del Norte County and continued as an avid sportsman until well into his 90's, particularly enjoying steelhead fishing.
Mr. Gifford was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Gifford, his second wife, Ruby Gifford, and his son, Jim Gifford. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie and Brian Potter of Crescent City; stepson, Robert Harris and wife Carol of Schaumsburg, Ill.; and daughter-in-law Sandy Gifford of Roseburg, Ore. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Becky and husband Glenn Dold of Hillsboro, Ore., David Gifford and wife Cindy of Las Vegas, Nev., Brooke Potter of Folsom, and Casey Potter of Eureka, as well as two great-granddaughters, Rainy Dae and Natalee Rae Dold of Hillsboro, Ore. Mr. Gifford is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Barbara Gifford of Smartsville, and sister Marie Ebbert of Anderson, Ind.”

Her obituary in the Ocala Star-Banner reported “Ruby O. Gifford, 77, homemaker, of the 2900 block of Northwest 18 Street, died July 7, 1990, at WeCare Nursing Center.
A native of Morehead, Ky., Mrs. Gifford came here 19 years ago from Indianapolis, Ind.
Survivors include her husband, Ercel T. Gifford, Ocala; a son, Robert R. Harris, Chicago; a daughter, Sherrie L. Potter, Crescent City, Calif.; a brother, Lester Porter, Ohio; a sister, Nola Hayes, Elizabethtown, Ky; and four grandchildren.”
(Lester is a half-brother, the son of John W. Fouch and his second wife Amanda Parker. They divorced and Amanda remarried to Cleveland Porter, and Lester took his stepfather’s surname.)
