The reported birthdate may be incorrect. He was recorded in the censuses as age 8 in 1850, age 13 in 1860, age 33 in 1880, and age 55 born Feb 1845 in 1900. (I have not taken notes on the 1870 census for him.)

Her death certificate records Rachel McCarty, age 75 years 7 months 21 days, birthdate has only the year which is overwritten with three different numbers, died 26 Aug 1930 in Owingsville, Bath Co., Ky, widow of James G. McCarty, father Isaac Ulery born in Ky, mother’s maiden name Mary Setters, birthplace blank, cause of death mitral regurgitation, informant Luther McCarty, Owingsville, Ky, burial in McCarty graveyard.

1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, Pokesville precinct, enumerated 8 June, lists on p. 10 as family #99:
McCarty, James, 33, farmer; Rachel, wife, 23; Samuel, son, 8; Isack, son, 5; James, son, 3; Morandy, 2, dau; William, 9/12, son. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1900 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville district 5, enumerated 4 June, lists on p. 3A as family #54:
McCarty, James, 55, b. Feb 1845; Rachel, wife, 45, b. Feb 1855, married 25 years, mother of 14 children, 14 living; James, son, 21, b. Feb 1879; Luther, son, 19, b. June 1880; Thom, son, 18, b. Feb 1882; Banks, son, 17, b. Mar 1883; Bert, son, 15, b. Apr 1885; Santford, son, 14, b. Mar 1886; Frank, son, 13, b. Jan 1887; Joseph, son, 8, b. Dec 1891; Mary, dau, 11, b. The next household is their son Isaac, age 25, with his wife Amanda.

The number of children listed in these two censuses seems inconsistent with the recorded 14 children all living (it adds up to 15), unless Isaac was really older than 5 in 1880 and was a son of James’ first wife Miranda. The birthdate for James is also inconsistent with his age of 3 in 1880.
