Based on census records, his parents were probably really Alexander Newman and Sarah Williams. (The most common nickname for Alexander in east Kentucky is “Elick”.)
There were three James M. Newmans in Fleming Co. Ky born in 1854 or 1855, so be careful not to get them confused. (The others were James Minor Newman, 13 Jan 1854 - 24 Aug 1931, son of James Newman and Mary Ann Havens, who was married to Florence Graham, and James M. Newman, 31 Jan 1855 - 12 Apr 1937, son of Samuel Newman and Sarah Kinney, who was married to a wife named Emily Lucretia.)

1870 census of Fleming Co., Ky, Tilton precinct, lists as family #39:
Newman, Alex’r, 67, farmer; Jno M., 17; Jas. M., 15; Wm A., 12; Henry T., 9. All born in Ky.
These two census records must be for the James M. Newman who married Sally Gardner, because the other two James M. Newman’s were listed with their parents. The death certificate for Henry Thomas Newman (21 June 1861-21 Sep 1934) lists his parents as Alexander Newman and Sarah Jane Williams.
