Census Notes for James & Sarah (Family)
I cannot find this family in the 1850 census. It is possible that Sarah was James’ second wife, and that the older children are not hers. John M. Staton’s death certificate reports his mother’s maiden name as Mary Highley.
1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville precinct, enumerated 7 Aug, lists on p. 197 as family #1428:
James Staton Jr., 36; Sarah, 36; Jasper, 15; Zacariah, 13; Mary, 11; John, 8; George W., 6; Rachael O., 4; James, 1; Mary, 45. All born in Kentucky.
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Mudlick precinct, Olympian Springs P.O., enumerated 6 Aug, lists on p. 12 as family #84/86:
Staten, James, 47, farmer; Sarah, 45; Mary, 21; John, 19; George, 17; Rachael, 14; James, 11; Lafayette, 7. All born in Kentucky.
1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, Polksville precinct, enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 21 as family #193/196:
Staton, James, 57, farmer, b. Ky Va Va; Sarah, 55, wife, b. Ky Ky Ky; James, 21, son; Lafayette, 18, son. Both sons born Ky Ky Ky.
1900 census of Menifee Co., Ky, district 3, enumerated 20 June, lists on p. 11B as family #192:
Staton, James, 77, b. May 1823, farmer; Nancy, wife, 42, b. July 1857, married 18 years, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Igo, Clell, nephew, 9, b. Jan 1891; Martha A., niece, 7, b. June 1892. All born Ky Ky Ky.
Clell and Martha Igo are probably nephew and niece of Nancy rather than James, because none of James’ sisters or half-sisters married an Igo, and they would have been too old to have children born in the 1890’s anyway.
