Notes for John Mason Teal
His death certificate records J. M. Teal, age 68 years 4 months 18 days, born 11 Feb 1844 in Bath Co., died 29 June 1913 in Farmers, Rowan Co., Ky, married, father Wash Teal, mother’s maiden name Nice Ingram, both born in Bath Co., Ky, cause of death tuberculosis of bowels, informant Mrs. Carpenter, Farmers, Rowan Co., Ky, burial in Jones graveyard, Salt Lick.
Census
His name is recorded as John Teal in the 1850 census, as Mason Teal in the 1860 census, as J. M. Teal in the 1870 census, as John M. Teel in the 1880 census, as James M. Teal in the 1900 census, and as John M. Teal in the 1910 census.
Notes for Permelia / Amelia Hagerman
She appears to have gone by Permelia as a child and young woman, including the 1870 census, and as Amelia in later records.
Several online family trees at Ancestry.com identify John M. Teal’s wife Amelia with Amelia Ingram, daughter of Hiram Ingram, presumably because she was the same age, and because of other connections between the Teal and Ingram families (in particular, John’s sister Evaline Teal married Amelia Ingram’s brother George W. Ingram.) But the 1870 census shows Amelia Ingram as age 19, single, living with her widowed mother Nancy in Rowan Co., while it records John M. Teal in Bath Co. with a wife Permelia age 19, and son Edward age 2. The 1900 and 1910 censuses both indicate that John and Amelia married about 1868 and that it was a first marriage for both of them, and that Amelia was the mother of 9 children all living, suggesting that the wife Permelia in 1870 is the same person as the wife Amelia in 1900 and 1910. Moreover, all the death records that I’ve found for John and Amelia’s children (including the oldest, Edward) give their mother’s maiden name as Hagerman. Names given on death certificates are sometimes wrong, but for three records to agree on the same name is pretty conclusive.
Her death certificate records Amelia Teal, age 93 years 23 days, born 14 Nov 1850 in Barth Co., Ky, died 7 Dec 1943 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, widow of John M. Teal, residence 2049 Courtland, Norwood, Hamilton Co., Ohio, father’s name unknown, mother’s maiden name unknown, cause of death chronic myocarditis, informant Mrs. W. J. Foster (or possibly Frater), burial in Reading Cemetery.
Census Notes for John Mason & Permelia / Amelia (Family)
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Mudlick precinct, Olympian Springs P.O., enumerated 24 Aug, lists on p. 37 as family #271/273:
Teal, J. M., 25, carder; Permelia, 19; Edward, 1. All born in Ky.
The next household is that of G. W. and Nica Teal. The preceding household is that of Alfred and Margaret (Ingram) Myers.
1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 16 June, lists on p. 17 as family #147/151:
Teel, John M., 36, married, works in factory; Ebinezer, 12, son; William W., 9, son; Nora, 5, dau; Clarence, 2, son. All born Ky Ky Ky.
I do not know where Amelia is in this census year. This has got to be the same family, though. Not only does the list of children match the 1900 census (see below), but the next household is that of Alfred and Margaret Myers, who were also next door to J. M. Teal in the 1870 census.
1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, enumerated 27 June, lists on p. 23A as family #395/399:
Teal, James M., 52, b. Jan 1848, day laborer; Amelia, wife, 49, b. Nov 1850, married 31 years, mother of 9 children, 9 living; Edward L., son, 29, b. Sep 1870, married, 11/12, salesman; Nora S., dau, 24, b. Apr 1876; Clarence, son, 22, b. Oct 1877; Mollie E., dau, 20, b. Aug 1879; J. Samuel, 16, b. Mar 1884; Sherman, son, 12, b. May 1888; Walter, son, 8, b. Feb 1892; Harry B., son, 4, b. May 1896. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The name “James” is inconsistent with all other records. Since he was usually known as J. M., it is probable that the census taker misheard J. M. as James M.
Although Edward is listed as married, not widowed or divorced, there is no wife present in the household.
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, enumerated 15 April, lists on p. 2B as family #37/42:
Teal, John W., 66, laborer at saw mill; Amelia, wife, 60, first marriage for both, married 42 years, mother of 9 children, 8 living; Walter S., son, 17; Harry B., son, 13. All born Ky Ky Ky.
