The Kentucky birth index lists his birth twice. In 1934, it was recorded as Estill Dehart, born 7 Feb 1934 in Rowan Co., mother’s maiden name Vada Johnson. In 1950, a delayed certificate was filed for Johnie E. Dehart, born 31 Jan 1934 (indexed as Breathitt Co., but that is just because 1950 is in one of the spans when the certificates were misindexed11.)
My presumption is that when Johnie was applying for Social Security in 1950, the original birth certificate could not be located because (a) it was not under the name John(ie), and (b) the date on the certificate was one week later than John thought his birthdate was. What I do not know is which birth date is correct. Perhaps the original was filed a week late and accidentally recorded the filing date as the birth date. But the family may have instead become confused about his birthdate.
The SSDI lists Johnnie E. Dehart, born 31 Jan 1934, died 23 Mar 2001, location not specified, SSN issued in Kentucky.
