As a child and young man he went by John Yazel or Yeazel, but for some reason after moving to Ohio he switched to Jones, and when providing information for his death certificate, his son Daniel Calvin assumed that Y(e)azel had been his mother’s maiden name. One possible reason is that he was the son of Diane Frazier and a previous husband who was a Jones, and he went by Y(e)azel while his mother and stepfather were living, then went back to his birth surname later in life. (I do not have a marriage date for John Yeazel Sr. and Diane Frazier, so do not know for certain which children are from their marriage.)

The identification of these two entries as being the same family is based primarily on the death certificates of John and Sarah, which give her parents as Benjamin Johnson and Sarah Moore, and his mother as Diane Yeazel.
