His surname is also spelled Yeazel, Yeazle, Yazle and even Yeasel. I’m entering it as Yazel primarily because that is how most descendants spell it.

Her place of birth in the censuses is variously given as Virginia, Kentucky, and South Carolina.

1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 21 Aug, lists as family #369:
John Yeasel, 65, farmer, b. Ky; Diana, 44, b. South Carolina; Mary, 17; Jacob, 15; Rebecca, 14; Eliza, 11; Oma Ann, 9; Saunders, 6; Charlotte, 2; John Yeasel, 9. All children born in Kentucky.
The fact that John is listed after the other children, and being the same age as Oma Ann, suggests that he may not be a full sibling of the other children. This is especially significant considering that as an adult he started going by the surname Jones. Perhaps he was a nephew whom they raised? Another possibility is that this is a blended family, with Mary through Oma Ann being children of John and a previous wife (although they are probably too young to be children of his first wife Rebecca Frazier); Saunders and Charlotte being children of John and Diane, and John being a child of Diane and a previous husband Jones, who was raised with John Y(e)azel’s surname since he was so young when they married.
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 1 Aug, lists on p. 34 as family #251/256:
John Yazel, 75, farmer, b. Va; Diena, 47, b. Ky; Rebecca J., 22; Eliza, 22; Oma Ann, 18; Sanders, 14; Charlotte, 10; Nancy Buchanan, 9. All children born in Kentucky.
I cannot find this family in 1870.
1880 census of Fleming Co., Ky, Poplar Plains precinct, enumerated 24 June, lists on p. 29 as family #248/251:
Hamilton, W. L., 31, farmer, b. Ky Ky Ky; Charlotte, b. Ky Ireland Ky; Josephine, 12, dau; Frank, 9, son; J. W., 7, son; Jesse, 3, son; Elzth S., 1, dau. All children born Ky Ky Ky. Yeazle, Diana, 70, boarder, b. Ky Tenn Tenn.
Despite Charlotte’s father being listed as born in Ireland, and Diana being listed as a boarder instead of mother-in-law, her death certificate gives her parents as John Yeazle and Diane Frazier.
