Notes for Robert Lee & Cynthia Ann (Family)
Morgan Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage on 14 Nov 1894 of Robert R. Mays and Cyntha A. Cox at Ruben Cox’s by H. D. Adkins, M.C.C., witnesses Claborn Mays and Ruben Cock. (Ruben’s surname is really spelled both ways.)
Census
Since Robert and Cynthia were married in 1894, and she died in 1898, they do not appear together in any census. The 1900 census records Robert living with Cynthia’s father Reuben Cox:

1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 2, enumerated 23 June, lists on p. 20A as family #351/360:
Cox, Reuben, 64, b. Mar 1836, Va Va Va; Mary J., wife, 45, b. Feb 1855, Ky Ky Ky, married 16 years, mother of 0 children, 0 living; Lula, granddau, 4, b. June 1895; Lawson, Cora A., stepdau, 15, b. Mar 1885; Curtis B., stepson, 12, b. Aug 1887; Mays, Robert L., lodger, 25, b. Oct 1874, widowed. All except Reuben born Ky Ky Ky.

Lula is probably Robert and Cynthia’s daughter, although it is curious that she is recorded with the surname Cox in both 1900 and 1910, and in 1910 she was listed as Robert’s stepdaughter. (See Robert’s 1910 census notes under his second marriage, to Martha Emaline Cox.) If the reported birthdate is correct, then she was born seven months after Robert and Cynthia married; it is conceivable that Cynthia was pregnant by someone else before they married, but even so, a child would generally be given the surname of her mother’s husband. Another possibility is that her birth date was reported incorrectly in the 1900 census, and that she was really born out-of-wedlock to Cynthia in June 1894.
