The reported date of birth is at least three years too early. His parents were both still single and living with their respective parents in 1860, and in the 1870 census Lafayette was listed as age 7.

Their son Samuel’s death certificate (in 1949, informant his wife Hattie) lists his mother’s maiden name as Alice Sumers, and their daughter Mary’s death certificate (in 1914, informant blank) lists her mother’s maiden name as Alice Blanton. I’m giving greater credence to the earlier record, since it is closer to when Alice was alive.
