This family’s surname is spelled as Kelley in most early records, and most Carter and Elliott County descendants continue to use that spelling. Most of the Rowan County family members switched to the spelling Kelly in the early 1900’s.
Many of the marriages in Rowan County were performed by John Kelley/Kelly, especially for the Tackett and Caudill families.

Kelly, age 86 years 8 months 7 days, birthdate blank, born in North Carolina, died 18 Feb 1917 in Rowan Co., Ky, occupation farmer and minister, father Tom Kelley, mother’s name blank, cause of death pneumonia and cardiac asthma, informant Thomas Kelley, Enterprise, Ky.
