His death certificate records Pinknie Hall, age 54 years, 4 months, 8 days, born 20 July 1866 in Kentucky, died 28 Nov 1920 in Cedar Grove precinct, Carter Co., Ky, single, father Anedon Hall, born in north VA, mother Lizzy Bith Broy (or Brog or Brag or Bray), born in old VA, cause of death chronic nephritis, informant Sam Hillman, Enterprise, Ky, burial in Dean Cemetery.

The handwriting is difficult to decipher. The a’s and o’s look identical, as do the y’s and g’s, and there is not much difference between r and n. The word I’ve transcribed as VA looks exactly like a capital W, but I’m conjecturing that it is instead a ligature of V A. So Lizzy Bith’s maiden name is speculative pending further evidence.

He was listed in the 1880 census as age 18, and in the 1910 census as age 50, so the birthdate is probably off by several years. Unfortunately, I have not found him in any other census years. Most likely he sometimes went by another name, and since Hall is such a common surname and he never married, it would be hard to identify him without knowing what that other name was.

Be careful not to confuse him with Pinkney Asbury Hall born 1863 of Knox Co., who appears consistently in that county including in 1880 and 1910.

My closest interest, though, is in the evidence he supplies for the parents of Mary Jane Hall who married William Patton Dean.
