Census Notes for Milton & Hulda (Family)
1900 census of Carter Co., Ky, district 4, enumerated 23 June, lists on p. 21A as family #395/405:
Smith, Milton, 27, b. June 1872, day laborer; Hulda, wife, 23, b. Mar 1877, married 6 years, mother of 6 children, 3 living; Albert, son, 4, b. Feb 1896; Gracie, dau, 4/12, b. Jan 1900; Elizabeth, mother, 61, b. Mar 1849, widowed, mother of 4 children, 4 living; John A., brother, 32, b. May 1868, single. All listed as born Ky Ky Ky, although that conflicts with other census years.
Note that the age and birthdate for Elizabeth add up to 1910 rather than 1900. John’s age is also 12 years off from the 1880 census, but I find it hard to believe that there were two Pinkney Halls in Carter Co. with a mother named Elizabeth who remarried to a Smith and a half-brother named John A. Smith.
1910 census of Carter Co., Ky, Upper Tygart district, enumerated 6 May, lists on p. 13A as famiy #208:
Smith, Milton, 37, widowed, b. Ky Ky Va, farmer; Albert, son, 15; Gracie, dau, 12; Martha, dau, 10; Elijah, son, 7. All children born Ky Ky Ky; Hall, Pinkney, half-brother, 50, single, farm laborer; Hollingsworth, Peggy, servant, 17, divorced, no children, All except Milton born Ky Ky Ky.
The half-brother Pinkney Hall, mother Elizabeth Smith and brother John A. Smith in these two census readings strongly suggest that he is the same person listed in 1880 as David N. Smith, age 6, son of Nicles and Elizabeth Smith, with a brother and half-brother by those names.
