Notes for Jackson Goldy
His death certificate records Jack Goldie, age 76 years 8 months 26 days, birthdate blank, born in Virginia, died 1 May 1938 in Salt Lick, Bath Co., Ky, farmer, widowed, father Henry Goldie, born in Virginia, mother’s name and birthplace don’t know, cause of death chronic interstitial nephritis, informant John Goldie, Salt Lick, Ky, burial in Purvis Cem.
The reported age at death would imply a birthdate of 6 Aug 1861. It is incorrect; he was listed in the 1860 census as age 4.
Notes for Elizabeth “Lizzie” C. Purvis
Lizzie apparently died between 1904 and 1907, more likely towards the earlier end of that span, because in the 1910 census, Jackson is listed with a second wife Lou, their number of years married listed as 3, but with two children Jackson age 7 and Sarah age 6, whose mother was apparently Lizzie. (Jackson and Lizzie’s son Leslie is living with Mary Jane and her husband Leslie Hardin, while their son Shelley is listed with his half-brother Alfred.)
The 1900 census gave her birthdate as June 1865, but since her parents were married on 7 Aug 1865, I consider it more likely that she was born in June 1866. (The 1870 census listed her as age 4 and the 1880 census as age 14.)
Warning: Several family trees on Ancestry.com have attached to her a death date of 24 Sep 1923, but that is for a different Elizabeth Goldy/Goldie, daughter of Jefferson Goldy/Goldie, who never married.
Census Notes for Jackson & Elizabeth “Lizzie” C. (Family)
1900 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 18 June, lists on p. 17A as family #322:
Golda, Jackson, 35, b. Sep 1864, farmer; Lizzie, wife, 34, b. June 1865, married 10 years, mother of 6 children, 4 living; Alfred, son, 16, b. Jan 1884; Albert, son, 15, b. Jan 1884; Carrie, dau, 13, b. Sep 1887; Henry, son, 8, b. April 1892; Sheley, son, 4, b. Nov 1895; Lesley, son, 2, b. Feb 1898; Marry J., stepdau, 10, b. Aug 1899; Golda, Joseph, nephew, 21, b. June 1879. All born Ky Ky Ky.
The age for Jackson is entered as 44, and then crossed out and replaced with 35 to be consistent with the birthdate. Similarly, the age for Henry is entered as 7 and then crossed out and replaced with 8. Since the 1910 census (see notes for his second marriage) lists Jackson as 56, it is very probably the birthdate that was wrong, rather than the age. (It would have been easy for the census taker to mishear 54 as 64.)
