If his mother’s name was really Nancy Mauk, then she must have died in childbirth, and the month of birth may have been misrecorded, because his (half?) brother William Frank Pelfrey was born on 27 June 1878, which would be only 8 months after October 1877. Another possibility is that in transfering the records from the midwife or doctor’s notes onto the birth report to the state auditor, the county clerk may have misinterpreted Marth Nance as Nancy Mauk.
His death certificate records John N. Pelfrey, age 47 years 2 days, born 1 April 1877 in Ky, died 3 Apr 1924 in Carter Co., Ky, married, carpenter, father Isaac Pelfrey, mother’s maiden name Martha Arnole, both born in Ky, cause of death injury and congestion of right lung, informant Martha Pelfrey, Olive Hill, Ky, burial in Junior Cemetery.
