Notes for John Joshua Grayson
I do not know whether his full name is John Joshua Grayson, or Joshua John Grayson. He appears in records as Joshua (his marriage record), as John (the 1850 census), and as J. J. Grayson (signatures as witness), but I have not seen any primary record that spells out both given names together.
Notes for Polly Carah
Her surname is probably a variant of the family that later became known in the Bath county area as Carey.
Notes for John Joshua & Polly (Family)
Bath Co., Ky marriage book 1 records the marriage of Joshua Grayson and Polly Carah in June 1823.
Census
1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 14 Aug, lists on p. 9 as family #58:
John Grayson, 56; Polly, 33; Eldrige H., 30; Thomas E., 21; John N., 9; William E., 7.
The preceding household is headed by John H. Grayson, age 26.
Polly is too young to be Polly Carah, the mother of John’s five known sons Eldridge, Joshua, John H., Reason and Thomas. But since the 1850 census does not show relationships or marital status, it is unclear whether she is a second wife also named Polly, or some other relative such as a daughter-in-law. The two boys are probably grandchildren of John, rather than sons, because John had a known son John H. Grayson born about 1824 who was still living in 1850, and so it would be unlikely that he would give the same name to another son born ca 1841. But if Polly is not John’s wife, they may be her sons.
Since I have no Grayson ancestry, and this whole family is in my database only to document the relationship between the various Graysons who married distant cousins of mine, I am not spending the time to figure out how Polly and the two boys fit in.
