During the early part of his life his surname was usually spelled Hay, but in later life it is recorded as Hays or Hayes.
His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917, records Rufus Hay, age 28, residence Moon, Morgan Co., Ky, born 24 Nov 1888 in Elliott Co., Ky, occupation farming, married supporting a wife and 1 child, previous military service in the U. S. Calvary 2 months 8 days in Missouri.
The SSDI lists Rufus Hayes, born 24 Nov 1888, died Feb 1965, last residence Kentucky.
The Kentucky death index lists Rufus H. Hayes, age 76, died 18 Feb 1965 in Rowan Co., residence same.

The SSDI lists Ella Hayes, born 3 Dec 1888, died Nov 1984, last residence Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.
The Kentucky death index lists Ella I. Hayes, age 95, died 20 Dec 1984 in Tennessee, residence Rowan Co., Ky.
All three of their sons were residing in Tennessee at some point (see their notes), so presumably she was living with one of them at the time of her death. One of the month reports (Nov vs Dec) must be wrong; I would trust the Tennessee one more since death certificates are usually filed in a more timely manner than reports to Social Security. Her gravestone is no help; it says only 1888-1984, and there is no obituary online.

The preceding household is headed by Reuben Ison and Alice Coldiron. Alice is a sister of Ella’s mother Minerva Coldiron, and Reuben is a first cousin of Ella’s (and Estill’s) father Spencer Ison. Ella’s grandmother Rebecca (Coldiron) Pennington is living with them.
