His birthdate is uncertain. He was recorded as age 8 in the 1850 census, and as age 31 in the 1870 census. I have not found him in the 1860 census.
Be careful not to confuse him with George W. McCormick born Aug 1841 in Bath Co, son of Joseph Morrison McCormick and Louisiana Allen, who married Elizabeth Lewis. (I mention this mainly because Ancestry.com has a tendency to suggest all the records for that other George W. McCormick as “hints” for this one.)
