Notes for James Dilon Clark
His death certificate records James Dilon Clark, age 87 years 2 months 8 days, born 22 April 1831 in Owen Co., Ky, died 30 June 1918 in Peaks Mill precinct, Franklin Co., Kentucky, widower, father Amos Clark, born in Owen Co., mother’s maiden name don’t know, cause of death hypertrophy of prostate gland with chronic ceptitis, informant Clarence Clark, Frankfort, Ky, burial in Peaks Mill.
This James Clark is in my database only to document that he is not the same person as the James Clark of Bath County who married Malinda Malvina Clayton and was the father of John Albert Clark, Jesse H. Clark, and Robert Talmadge Clark. Due to the similarities in name and birthdate, and the fact that John Albert Clark was born in Owen County, many researchers (aided and abetted by Ancestry’s hint engine) have assumed that this James Dilon Clark’s death record and 1850 census record apply to that other James Clark.

All sons recorded with the occupation farm laborer.
The ages for Benjamin and Thomas are high by 20 years. It appears that the census taker, when filling in the ages, misread 1859 as 1839 and 1861 as 1841.
It is extremely unlikely that all of James’ and Mattie’s married adult children would be living with them, with none of their spouses or children. It is far more likely that they misunderstood the instructions and thought they were supposed to report all of their living children, whether residing with them or not. It’s certainly convenient for present day family researchers, though.
