The reported age is inconsisent with the reported birthdate. The censuses and his death records agree on Dec 1897.

Her death certificate records Mae Collins, age 34 years 5 months 22 days, born 20 Aug 1899 in Kentucky, died 12 Feb 1933 in Owingsville, Bath Co., Ky, married, father Willie Meadows, mother’s maiden name Lula McCarty, both born in Ky, cause of death pulmonary tuberculosis, informant Clarence Collins, Owingsville, Ky, burial in Jackson graveyard.
The reported birthdate is incorrect, since she was recorded as age 4 in the 1900 census, with a younger brother Charlie reported as 11 months born June 1899. (The reported dates for that family seem pretty bogus, but censuses cannot report babies who haven’t been born yet, so May’s birthdate must be at least early enough to allow for another child born in the middle of 1899.)
The later censuses would be consistent with a birthdate in Aug 1898 (she was reported as 11 in 1910, 21 in 1920, and 31 in 1930), but even that would be very tight spacing with Charles, and it is unlikely a toddler of under 2 years old would be reported as age 4. So it is more probable that she was born in 1896 or 1897, making her two or three in 1900, and the family later reported her as younger than her real age, so she took them at their word.

1930 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville precinct, enumerated 14 April, lists on p. 4A as family #124/130:
Collins, Clarence, 32, age at first marriage 16, farmer; May, 31, age at first marriage 15; Everett, son, 13; Fred, son, 7; Clara F., dau, 3 11/12; Dosha, mother(-in-law partially erased), 51, widowed. All born Ky Ky Ky.
(It looks like the census taker accidentally wrote mother-in-law for Dosha, and then tried to correct it to just mother, but ink doesn’t erase very well.)
