His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Vernon Evert Varvel, age 20, residence 2 Wilmington, Clinton Co., Ohio, born 3 Apr 1898, farming, nearest relative Arthur Oglesbee, nearest relative Amanda Eva Varvel, same address.
The SSDI lists Vernon E. Varvel, born 3 April 1898, died 21 July 1988, last residence Greenville, Darke Co., Ohio.
The Ohio deaths database records Vernon E. Varvel, age 90, born in Ohio, died 21 July 1988 at Wayne Hospital, Greenville, Darke Co., Ohio, widowed, farmer.
Although all these records agree on the birth year 1898, the 1900 census records him as age 1, born Apr 1899, and the 1910 census as age 10. So I really think 1899 is more likely, and that sometime around the date of his marriage he started representing himself as a year older.
