I cannot find this John M. Day in any census earlier than 1870, or any John Day son of a John Day of approximately the right age who is not already known to have a different family. His birthdate is only one day different from that of Jonathan J. Day born 21 April 1848 in Fleming Co, son of Squire A. Day and Maranda Jones, but he cannot be the same person, because that Jonathan Day was recorded with his parents in 1870, when this John M. Jones was already married to Lydia.
