1940 census of Jay Co., Indiana, Richland precinct, ED 38-16 (outside Dunkirk), enumerated 24 April, lists on p. 9A as family #180:
Singer, Fred, 31, b. Illinois, laborer at glass factory; Mattie, wife, 32, b. Ky; Nichols, Carl, stepson, 16, b. Ind; Jim, stepson, 14, b. Ind; June, stepdau, 14, b. Ind; Vernon, brother in law, 19, b. Ind.
The relationship of brother-in-law is probably incorrect. The 1930 census recorded him as a son of Mattie’s first husband Arthur Lee Nichols, not a brother. That would make him a step-stepson to Fred Singer, that is, a stepson of his wife.
The City Directory for Elkhart, Indiana records W. Fred Singer with wife Mattie P. living at 110 E. Indiana Ave. in 1942, and Fred W. Singer with wife Mattie living at the same address in 1945. Fred’s occupation in 1945 is recorded as a carpenter for NYCSys.
The 1955 directory records Mattie P. Singer, widow of Fred W. Singer, living at 1900 Leininger Ave in 1955. (The directory lists her daughter June and husband living at 2012 Leininger Ave.)
