The database of applications for military veteran headstones contains an application dated 17 May 1939, filed by James Nichols, Dunkirk, Indiana, for a stone for Arthur L. Nichols, died 6 Dec 1938, enlisted 7 May 1918, honorable discharge on 11 July 1919, private in Co. D, 22nd Engineers, buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dunkirk, Indiana. (The form does not include a space for date of birth even though it is placed on the markers; that is apparently obtained from military records.)

I cannot find Arthur in 1920. He was probably living in Indiana with his first wife. (I also cannot find his brother James in 1920, who was most likely in the same location.)
