His middle initial appears as L. in the 1880 census, but as M. in most other records. I suspect his full name was Hiram Martin Luther Blanton, although another possibility is Marcus Lafayette (which is how Marquis de Lafayette was usually interpreted in Kentucky.)

Be careful not to confuse him with Hiram Blanton born 12 April 1872 in Harlan Co., Ky, son of James Blanton and Martha Simpson, who married Josephine Elizabeth Hensley and died 7 Sep 1944 in Knox Co., Ky, nor with Hiram Blanton born 1867 in Harlan Co., son of Jackson Blanton and Elizabeth Murray. (I mention this because many family trees on Ancestry.com have attached either children and/or death data for one of those other Hiram Blantons to the one who married Ethel Florence Hall.)

I cannot find a death record for this one, but he apparently died sometime after 1930 and before 1960, most likely in Ohio.

Rowan Co., Ky marriage book 2, p. 148, records a license issued 26 Oct 1892 for the marriage of Hiram Blanton and Dora B. Buckner. There is a consent note attached from Overton and Mary A. Buckner for their daughter Dora. Bond surety is by D. G. Ham. Marriage register A records on p. 50 that the marriage took place on 27 Oct 1892.
