Notes for James Barton Ashcroft
James had three wives, all of whom outlived him.
The Ogden Standard Examiner of 8 June 1904 reported:
“BISHOP KILLED Santa Fe N M June 8 J B Ashcroft of Fruitland, a bishop of the Mormon church and manager of the operative cooperative co store at Fruitland was accidentally killed while blasting rock in the construction of an irrigating ditch for the Navajo Indians near Fruitland. He was knocked from a cliff by falling rocks death resulting instantly.”
Notes for Margaret Ellen Johnston
Her gravestone says Margaret Ellen Johnstun Ashcroft, July 15, 1865 - July 7, 1913. (It is in the same design as her sister wife Elizabeth Lavina.)
Notes for James Barton & Margaret Ellen (Family)
Four daughters who died as infants or toddlers are buried in Kirtland Cemetery.
This family is in my database only to show the relationship between Clara Ashcroft and Lavina Elizabeth Ashcroft, wives of Jesse Jerome Foutz.
Census
1900 census of San Juan Co., New Mexico territory, Fruitland precinct, enumerated 14 June, lists on p. 7B as family #129/133:
Ash---, J---, 37, b. Mar 1863, Utah England England, farmer; ---, wife, --, b. Ju-- 186-, Nevada Ohio England, married 17 years, mother of 8 children, 4 living; James, son, 9, b. Jan 1890; Clara, dau, 5, b. Oct 1894; Carol, son, 2, b. Oct 1897. All children born NM Utah Nevada.
The left edge of this page is very faint, making some of the names and dates unreadable. The “4 living children” is clear, but there are only three in the household. Considering the 17 years of marriage, perhaps they had a daughter who was already married.
(James Barton is also recorded on the following page with his third wife Hannah and their children.)
1910 census of San Juan Co., New Mexico territory, Fruitland precinct, enumerated 9 May, lists on p. 8A as family #150/154:
