Notes for James Barton Ashcroft
James had three wives, all of whom outlived him.
The Ogden Standard Examiner of 8 June 1904 reported:
“BISHOP KILLED Santa Fe N M June 8 J B Ashcroft of Fruitland, a bishop of the Mormon church and manager of the operative cooperative co store at Fruitland was accidentally killed while blasting rock in the construction of an irrigating ditch for the Navajo Indians near Fruitland. He was knocked from a cliff by falling rocks death resulting instantly.”

James Barton is also recorded on the preceding page with his first wife Margaret Johnston and their children. His middle wife Elizabeth Lavina Johnston is recorded in Valencia county with her parents, but their children are not with her, and the number of years married is incorrectly reported as 1.
