His death certificate records Charles Ison, age 81 years 0 months 23 days, born (22 or 23, overwritten) July 1830 in Carter Co., father Martiin Ison, born in Va, mother’s maiden name Nancy Sparks, born in N.C., cause of death paralysis due to cerebral hemorrhage, informant Charley R. Ison, Charity, Ky, burial in D. J. Ison’s.
The reported age at death would imply a birthdate of 23 July 1830, but his gravestone, an old hand chiseled one, says: CHAS ISON, B. JUL. 22, 1830 D. AUG 15, 1911, and the death certificate looks more like 23 was changed to 22 than vice versa.

1860 census of Carter Co., Ky, Bruin P.O., enumerated 16 Aug, lists on p. 179 as family #1285/1175:
Isom, Charles, 33, farmer; Sarah A., 26; Nancy, 8; Elizabeth, 7; Martin, 5; Joshua, 3; Doctor, 1. All born in Kentucky.
Based on other records, Charles should have been recorded as age 29 (if going by the rules of reporting the age on June 1), or 30 if reporting his age on the census visit date.
The next family is headed by his mother Nancy, with her age reported even more inaccurately, as 43.
1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, precinct 1, Sandy Hook P.O., enumerated 14 June, lists on p. 16 as family #89:
Ison, Charley, 39, farmer; Sarah, 38; Nancy, 18; Elizabeth, 17; Martin, 14; Joshua, 13; Doctor, 11; Anna, 8. Peters, Thomas, 23, farm hand. All born in Kentucky.

The next household is headed by his son Joshua, listed as age 23. I am not sure who the “daughter” Ella age 12 is. The report of a father born in England, and the fact that she was not recorded with the family in 1870, suggests that she is not really their daughter. Note that Charley and Sarah’s daughter Anna Ellen was already married, recorded in 1880 with her husband as Annie E. Lewis, age 18.
