I cannot find anyone identifiable as this James Goodpaster in the 1900 census, so he may have died before then. (There is a James Jefferson Goodpaster born Oct 1875 in Menifee Co. and living in Knott Co., but he is the son of James A. Goodpaster and Mary Ewing.)
