Notes for Ferdinand S. Parsons
His death certificate records F. S. Parsons, age 87, born 1824 in Virginia, died 15 June 1911 in Pine Grove, Rowan Co., Kentucky, farmer, married, father Steven Parsons, born in Va, mother’s maiden name Mary Debord, born in North Carolina, cause of death old age, informant Alfred Parsons, Triplet, Ky, burial in Porter graveyard.
The age and birthdate are off by about 20 or 21 years; see census record. The informant probably also has the wrong names for Ferdinand’s parents; he was recorded with the family of Hezekiah Parsons and Leah Debord as age 5 in 1850 and age 16 in 1860. It is possible, though, that they were raising a grandson or a nephew.

Notice how Ferdinand is packing on an extra year or two with each decade. There is a pencil correction of America’s age from the originally entered 52 to 58, but it is the year that should have been corrected instead.
In 1910 their son John is recorded as head of household, somewhat unexpectedly, since he is single and the youngest male in the household:
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pine Grove precinct, enumerated 20 May, lists on pp. 19B-20A as family #350/353, on Dry Branch Road:

Ferdinand was really only 64 or 65; when he died one year after this census, his age was reported as 87! Meanwhile, America has aged only 5 years since 1900.
