Notes for Thomas Leslie & Lucy Evalena (Family)
It is unclear whether Leslie and Lucy were ever married. Their son Luther was recorded as a McClain on his birth certificate, and went by that name later in life, but in the 1920 census he was recorded as Luther Switzer. Their daughter Judy was recorded as a McClain on her birth certificate but as a Switzer on her death certificate, with “illegitiamate” in the father space. But on the other hand, Lucy’s son William Leslie from her marriage to John Lancaster later went by the surname McClain. It would be unusual for a legitimately born child to adopt the surname of his mother’s unmarried partner, so perhaps Lucy was briefly married to Leslie McClain, they divorced, and Judy’s surname was ambiguous because Lucy was at that time unmarried, but sometimes going by McClain and sometimes by Switzer.
I am not, so far as I can tell, related to this McClain family. They are in my database mainly to help keep from confusing Lucy’s son William Leslie McClain, who went by his middle name, with my 2nd cousin once removed, Leslie Everett McClain, son of Luster McClain and Nancy Black.
