In most written records his name was given as William Paul (e.g., their son Jesse's obituary identifies him as son of "the late William Paul Dehart and Susan Jones" – see Jesse's notes, and his tombstone is labelled "W. P. Dehart" – see Susie's notes.) But all his children are consistent in naming their father as "Bill John" Dehart, and a few records do list him as W. J. Dehart (e.g., his daughter Laura's marriage record.) According to William Voigt, the reason he was called “Bill John” was because his father was named John.2

Ora Dehart (youngest son of W. P. and Susie), interviewed by Phil McBrayer in 1993, said that his father Bill John Dehart had siblings named Al, Jimmy, Kern, Sarah who never married, and another daughter who married a Caudill. Ora did not remember his grandparents' given names, but the list of children (except for Kern, which may be a nickname for Hazel Green) matches those of John Dehart & Nancy Bumgartner.

Ora also said that Bill John's first wife was Steve Conn's sister, and that their children (Ora's half-siblings) were Jack Dehart who married Martha Ann Clark, Jennie who married a Mynier, and Lucy who married a Warren. Ora lists his full siblings as Boone who married Annie Jent, Laura who married Jesse Crose, Lizzie who married Willy Crose, Frank who married Virgie Brown, Jess who married first Mandy Jane Mabry then Nellie Trent, Ollie who married Charlie Thornsbury, and Rosa who married Ramsey Wright.

Joint stone in Black-Trent Cemetery on Trent Ridge says "Susie Dehart May 3, 1866 - Oct 23, 1930 : W. P. Dehart Jan 14, 1854 - May 25, 1922".

Her death certificate (Vol. 58, #28607 ) records Mary S. Dehart, age 64 years 4 months 19 days, born 3 June 1866 in Kentucky, died 22 Oct 1930 in Elliottsville, Rowan Co., Ky, widowed, late husband Bill John Dehart, father James Jones, mother’s maiden name Emily Jones, both born in Ky, cause of death typhoid, informant Rosa Wright, Clayton, Ky, burial in Black Cemetery, undertaker Julius Trent.

In April 1930 she is enumerated with her three youngest children, but Jesse is listed as head of household, see his notes.

Rowan Co. marriage records, Book A, p. 32, lists marriage of William P. Dehart and Mary S. Dehart on 24 Nov 1890. (That Mary Susan was already named Dehart is confirming evidence of her brief marriage to William Madison “Bill Tom” Dehart, which otherwise I have no record of beyond family interviews.)

Some information on this family is from conversations with their youngest son Ora. He named his full siblings as Laura, Boone, Lizzie, Rose, Frank, Jesse, and Ollie, his half-siblings on the Dehart side as Jackson and Lucy, and his father as Bill John Dehart.

1900 census of Rowan Co., KY, Hoggtown prec. 4, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 9A as family #148:

Oct 1887; Laura M., 9, b. Mar 1891; Daniel B., 6, b. Jan 1894; Lizzie M., 4, b. Feb 1896; Rosetta, 2, b. Mar 1898; James F., 0 mos., b. May 1900; Deheart, Martin, 20, b. July 1879. All born in KY.

The 3 teens make it clear that Mary S. is Susie Jones Clark Dehart, although they are listed as Dehart instead of Clark.

Martin is labelled in this census as a son, despite being listed after the other children and with his surname entered, but he is too old to be a son of Susie. He could possibly be William’s son Jackson M. Dehart from his first marriage, but if so, his birthdate is very incorrect (it should be Oct 1876.) The name and age fit better for him to be the son of William’s brother Allen Dehart, who had a son Martin Dehart born July 1879. So most likely the relationship is incorrect and should be nephew.

Note that one of Susie's 9 living children (Sarah) was already married, which is consistent with only the first 8 listed being hers.

Dehart, W. P., 67, farmer; Mary, 53, wfie; Rosa, 22, dau, single; Frank, 20, son; Jesse (listed as daughter/female, but it's wrong), 17; Ola, dau, 14; Ora, son, 12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The previous household is David Clark, and the next one is Billie Dehart age 57.
